Abstract: | This paper explores the role of bequests (here as: beqs.) and of taxation on beqs. for the distribution of wealth. Investigated is a model with overlapping generations and heterogenous households where parents derive utility directly from their beqs. Using the coefficient of variation as the measure of inequality, beqs. per se diminish the inequality of wealth due to their raising of private savings. From a policy perspective, taxing beqs. and redistributing government revenue lump-sum among the young generation further decreases wealth inequality. |
