Abstract: | A few years ago, Florida Power and Light Company (FPL) became the first non-Japanese company to win the Deming Prize, Japan's top award for "total quality control in business. However, after receiving the prize, FPL discovered new problems, including piles of paperwork and an unmanageable bureaucracy. Instead of resting on its laurels, its management launched an ongoing restructuring program that saved $100 million over the last two years. That restructuring program is ongoing today as the company strives to maintain customer satisfaction, control costs, and increase revenues. |
