Abstract:It is generally accepted that venture capitalists Steve Jurvetson and Tim Draper coined the term "viral marketing" in an online newsletter on the Netscape website in 1997. The year before, the pair had backed one of the biggest viral marketers in history, the free email service Hotmail. The service leapt from zero to 12 million subscribers in 18 months with a marketing budget of just US$500,000. It did this by inserting an invitation into each Hotmail message, suggesting that recipients should open their own Hotmail accounts.
