Abstract:In today’s economy the knowledge-based activities are crucial to companies so that they can survive in the long run and acquire sustainable competitive advantage. For SME’s the accumulation of knowledge-based competencies is difficult, because their characteristics often prevent an effective leverage of these competencies. The authors consider how strategic alliances could help SMEs to acquire knowledge and develop more efficient learning processes. According to the empirical data, are SME’s quite reluctant to take part in strategic ‘knowledge sharing’ alliances, although the same results indicate that involvement it these alliances leads to a better company performance. Some entrepreneurs are afraid to cooperate and take part in alliances, because they think they might lose their competitive advantage when transferring their know-how to others.
