Abstract:This paper aims to clarify important contingencies for the success of knowledge management (KM) systems (KMS). A model is developed based on the IS success model, the resource-based view and the knowledge-based view to explain both direct and indirect effects (here as: d-and-i-effs.) of KMS on organizational performance (as: org-perf). A survey study was conducted concerning more than 100 organizations implementing various functions of KMS. The data were analyzed using structural equation modelling. There is strong support found for the proposed research model. KMS usage was found to have both d-and-i-effs. on org-perf. Especially, organizational agility and innovativeness were confirmed as important mediators of KMS effects.
