Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to describe how different occupational cultures influence men’s masculine identity. The authors use generally stereotyped masculine or feminine occupations like hairdressing, estate agency and firefighting as a case study to examine the processes of identification in the workplace. The analysis draws mainly upon interviews and workplace observation data from an Economic and Social Research Council-funded project. According to the results the bodily appearance is linked to successful identification in the workplace.
