Abstract:The external commercialization of technology assets has recently become more important, for example through out-licensing. Yet, many industrial firms (hereafter as: i-firms) encounter major managerial difficulties in outward technology transfer due to imperfections in the markets for technology. From a resource-based perspective, this paper analyses whether firms can overcome market inefficiencies by relying on innovation intermediaries e.g. consulting companies and internet platforms. Five hypotheses regarding organizational antecedents and performance consequences of intermediary services are tested using data from over 150 firms from multiple industries from Austria, Germany and Switzerland. Among others, it is shown that i-firms need to develop internal competencies of externally leveraging technology.
