Abstract:The concept of sustainable consumption (SC) has got increased attention recently. This paper provides an in-depth analysis of national influences on consumption patterns in the Republic of Ireland, focusing especially on the role of governance in the policy instruments' design for SC. It is argued that country-specific political conditions and policy frameworks essentially shape household consumption. There are three key types of policy instruments: economic, legislative, and communicative. SC policy making and implementation in Ireland are compared with examples of good practice from Europe. To conclude, proposed is an agenda for advancing Ireland's SC policy framework.
