Abstract:This article explores public attitudes toward the extension of rights to immigrants in 20 European countries. The study is based on ISSP data from 2003. Results indicate that resistance to the extension of rights is augmented by shorter periods of required residency for naturalization. Results also show that granting citizenship status is not sensitive to whether a regime assents or not to citizenship by birth. In addition, the study reveal that opposition to the expansion of rights is higher in countries consenting to dual citizenship.
