Abstract:The article reviews the literature on determinants of ethnic or national self-identities and self-esteem before examining these outcomes among a sample of second generation youths in Madrid and Barcelona. The psycho-social outcomes represent important dimensions of immigrant adaptation and can have significant consequences both for individual and collective mobilization. Current theories are mostly based on data from Anglophone countries and this new Spanish survey allows testing those theories in a completely different socio-cultural context. The analysis summarizes key factors of national identities and self-esteem among second generation immigrant children in Spain.
