Abstract:The aim of this study is to explore the effect of downsizing on company performance, using a sample of manufacturing firms drawn from the Spanish Survey of Business Strategies for the 1993–2005 period. No significant differences in post-downsizing performance were found between companies that downsize and those that don't. Similarly, it is found that major workforce reductions through collective layoffs don't result to improved performance levels either. Downsizing may not be a way for managers to enhance performance.
