Abstract:We examine the effects of anti-competitive service regulation by investigating whether OECD countries with less anti-competitive regulation achieve better economic performance in manufacturing industries, with more intensive less-regulated services usage. The results suggest that lower service regulation leads to more value added, productivity and export growth in downstream service-intensive industries. Especially the regulation of professional services and energy provision impact growth very negatively. The estimates are robust to accounting for alternative regulation forms(i.e. product and labour market regulation), alternative financial development measures and a variety of other specification checks.
