Abstract:Using a linked employer-employee dataset from the perspective of individuals rather than firms, this article examines some effects of joining startups. We show entrants in new firms to differ from those joining incumbent firms, by using a matching approach to compare a number of employees joining new firms in 1995/1996 along with a control group entering incumbent firms. The results imply higher individuals' employment stability in incumbent than in newly founded firms, as their risk of unemployment was lower. Particularly in eastern Germany, joining firms older than 6 years improved individuals' employment prospects.
