Abstract:This article states that companies can choose to conform to a norm along two dimensions: compliance with the goal and level of commitment to the procedures. A typology of four norm-conforming behaviors is developed. The corporate environmental revelations of 90 U.S. companies are investigated and it is found that companies derive different reputational rewards depending an whether they conform to the goal or procedure dimension of the environmental transparency norm. Furthermore, the relationship between conformity and reputation is moderated by the company's prior reputation and the strictness of the normative environment.
