Abstract:This article examines the extent to which non-governmental organizations (NGOs) highlight their sustainability activities. Employing data from Fortune 250 companies and the Forbes 200 NGOs, these two organizational types are compared with their commitment to sustainable development. Across eight dimensions of legitimacy it is found that companies beat NGOs. The results show a higher commitment to sustainability among companies than among NGOs. The results propose that an inadequacy of commitment and disclosure of NGOs prevents them from claiming legitimacy in their effort to participate in corporate governance.
