Abstract:The aim of the paper is twofold: (1) to look at several competing theories which might explain repeat unemployment in more detail and (2) to deal carefully with the problem of consistent data organization concerning especially past unemployment careers and the elimination of seasonal effects. The authors discriminate between three competing explanations of repeat unemployment advanced in literature - job search, segmentation and state dependence - using data from the Austrian unemployment register. The most prominent factor explaining repeat unemployment is past unemployment history.
