Abstract: | The strategic trade theory is described, its relevance in the context of small, open, less-developed countries (LDCs) is investigated. It is argued that the present system of industrial organisation and world trade is dominated more by market imperfections and government intervention than what the free-trade model assumes. Small LDCs cannot expect to win the strategic game of profit-shifting. Joint ownership firms might engage themselves in profit-raising. Free trade is not always the optimum. |
