Abstract: | Using technology to provide better Service to the Citizens is a concept that is gaining momentum in the Unites States federal government. Born in state and local governments, some federal agencies, and several European countries , the idea of serving the country's citizens more effectively through the use of information technology is on the verge of becoming a major movement. The genesis and aims of the Service to the Citizens program are discussed. Both the advantages and disadvantages of citizen access to government data are considered. It is demonstrated why it is important to strike a balance between making data available to the public and maintaining security. Some early successes and failures in the area are reviewed. |
