Abstract:This paper examines the economic effects of the synthesizer as a major technological change on the performing musician market and the music industry. It is found that fewer musicians than ever may now share in career employment success, as many are being replaced by sophisticated electronic synthesizers. In economics we are led to believe that technological changes in the aggregate result in more positive than negative effects to society. Such is not the case with technological changes in the music industry.
