Abstract:Today, software maintenance still consumes more than half of all development resources. Part of the problem is that much of existing software was produced before widespread use of structured techniques. Another part of the problem might be the difficulty of collecting data for managing software maintenance - particularly if the data available are incomplete or insufficient. A case study is presented. This describes an approach to developing analysis procedures in support of maintenance management goals when only partial data are available. It is shown that the data required need to be neither perfect nor complete to provide management insight into ongoing software maintenance.
