Abstract:Organizations have to make a choice between two basic control strategies when they are facing increasing complexity and uncertainty. They may choose to invest in vertical information systems or they may try to reduce organizational complexity and foster self-contained tasks. The study is based on a comparison of case situations drawn from five engineering workshops in Philips in the Netherlands.
