Abstract: | Population growth in the USA has major ramifications for the world economy, the environment and society. If present trends continue, the population could double in less than 70 years. Immigration and children born to immigrants after arrival in the USA account for 50% of population growth, and this share is projected to increase steadily. Progress in deficit reduction, equity and opportunity for all Americans , and a healthier environment would be well served by temporarily closing the door on immigration while the nation takes stock of its resources and goals. |
