Abstract:The Cowles Commission for Research in Econometrics created a revolution in econometric methods and practice during its years at the University of Chicago from 1939 to 1955. This article describes that revolution, together with some of its antecedents, and attempts to put it in perspective today, using simple examples and no matrix algebra. The author gives a brief sketch of the origin of the Cowles Commission and describes the two main components of the Cowles econometric revolution at Chicago.
