Abstract:Today, more and more corporations are creating a new position: the ethics officer. The ethics officer (EO) is often expected to be confessor, corporate conscience, investigator, enforcer, and teacher, all rolled into one. Some companies have had an EO for some time, but in light of the new federal sentencing guidelines, it is likely that many more companies will consider creating the position. The guidelines, which became law on November 1. 1991, allow judges to reduce fines and sentences if a company has in place personel and programs to prevent, investigate, and punish wrongdoing. This increases the incentive for corporations to create or further develop ethics programs and to designate someone with oversight responsibilities.
