Abstract: | There is a long tradition in industrial organization of analyzing the characteristics of technology that are important determinants of market structure. In this paper the authors test and find support for the hypotheses that the application of flexible technologies has been a catalyst in shifting the plant-size distribution in U.S. manufacturing industries towards smaller average plant size. The size distribution of firms in manufacturing industries has shifted over time. |
