Abstract:The security of deposits in banks and savings banks is closely related to the appropriate size of bank capital, above all the size of guarantee capital.Banks in the Republic of Slovenia are on the basis of the existing legislation obliged to form reserves, the Bank of Slovenia as an issuer of licenses and permissions thus indirectly controls the financial performance of banks and savings banks. The first and important instrument of granting the security of deposits is the obligatory insurance performed by the Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for the insurance of savings deposits, next comes the insurance of deposits with an insurance agency or an other bank, a savings bank or any other institution the business of which is to issue guarantees. In line with the special decree by the Minister of Finance baks and savings banks are to ensure every saving deposit with the Agency, i.e. a deposit which does not exceed 500,000 tolars, and every foreign currency deposit which does not exceed DEM 20,000.We can conclude that the insurance of deposits is systematical and regulated but in practice it may become rather complicated. The financial standing of banks varies and this is why the Association of Banks of Slovenia is working on the formation of a bank risk fund, which, unfortunately, will not be high enough to insure all bank deposits.During the transitional period the state should step in and take the necessary measures.
