Abstract:The paper tries to answer some of the fundamental questions concerning the regional dimensions of the transition of the Slovene economy from the socialist to the market economy. The economic burden of the transition is not equally shared by all regions: old industrial regions with strong environmental pollution are more affected than regions with a more diversified economic structure and a larger percentage of tertiary activities.Whereas in the past regional policy in Slovenia promoted only development of agricultural and depopulating areas, in the future it will have to encourage also structural adaptation of old industrial regions going hand in hand with the industrial and labour policy.Regional policy is an integral part of general economic policy: the financial resources for regional development are resources for economic development, only they are not used from sectoral but from territorial point of view. The implementation of a comprehensive regional policy need not increase government expenditures, it will only change their structure and it might even enchance their economic efficiency.
