Abstract:In a recent article Cuenca Esteban re-examined the growth of industrial output on Britain during the industrial revolution. His analysis was based on a revisionist assessment of the size of the cotton industry. The authors claim that in returning to the question of cotton's weighting, Cuenca Esteban's results are unreliable and his interpretation of his findings is quite misleading. They conclude that their own earlier findings remain the best-guess estimates of industrial output growth.
