| Abstract: | US pressure on the International Monetary Fund to slacken its credit conditions will mount at the IMF Annual Meeting on September 28 in Washington. Fund officials should remember what they are there for and stick to their guns. The IMF has always been a convenient scapegoat for populist politicians looking to justify their countries' poor financial performance. It can therefore hardly have come as a surprise to its officials that opposition parties throughout Central and Eastern Europe are insisting that unreasonable Fund demands will throw their countries into poverty. |
