Abstract: | Cleaning up the environment will be difficult and costly, but the region's governments and companies have to start now. Doing so later will be tougher, and more expensive. A couple of hours along on the main Cluj-Bucharest line, the sky begins to darken. So does the landscape: fields, trees, houses, even people and livestock are blackened by fallout from Copsa Mica's ageing aluminium smelter and carbon-black factory, perched ominously beside one another in front of the railway station. Communism was dirty. |
