Abstract:One strategic action which is often taken by firms in need of a turnaround is to bring in a new CEO. Many observers argue that the new CEO must replace a large number of top managers to effect a change in the firm's performance. Critics of this perspective insist that substantial levels of turnover may only further disrupt the organization decreasing performance. This study addresses this controversy using a sample of 84 firms which experienced CEO succession. The results are presented, and the implications of the findings are discussed.
