| Abstract: | Unprecedented economic growth has thrust Asia to the threshold of a dramatic new era. According to the World Bank, Asia's share of global trade rose from 19.5% in 1985 to 26.4% in 1994, while that of the European Union and the United States remained at around 34% and 17%, respectively. Res ipsa loquitur - the facts speak for themselves, so much so that the World Bank has described Asia as an economic miracle. However, increasingly, there has been much criticism of the use of this term. |
