Abstract:The author argues that it is realistic today to promote a vision of enhanced freedom for the British people and reduced power for the state - a rolling back of big government. It is a startling fact that, in 1994-95, after 15 years of Conservative rule, the state was still spending 43.5p out of every pound of national income compared with 44p in 1979-80. In addition, the extent of state regulation of human activities is today wider, deeper and more intrusive than it was in 1979.
