Abstract:From 1965 to 1990 the twenty-three economies of East Asia grew faster than all other regions of the world. Most of this achievement is centered in eight economies: Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Republic of Korea; and the three newly industrialized economies of Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand. Recently China, particularly southern China, has also recorded remarkable high growth rates by adopting policies that are in some way similar to its neighboring high-performing countries. These high-performing East Asia economies have become the object of various development studies.
