Abstract: | There is academic finance and practitioner finance, but is the distinction between the two meaningful? Is it the content, method, or style of financial writing which is most useful for telling the two apart? If it were content, the distinction might indeed be important or at least provocative, but it is not.Rather, it is mathematics which distinguishes academic finance from practitioner finance - not mathematics as method, but mathematics as style; not mathematics as science, but mathematics as metaphysics. This is an insubstantial basis for a cultural divide that has proscribed numerous research opportunities that would surely contribute to a greater understanding of finance. |
