| Abstract: | We present some theoretical premises for the computation and estimation of the rates of return to ivestment in education.In particular, the cost-benefit approach and the approach based on the Mincer earnings function is presented.Some related problems (such as sample selectio bias, valuation of opportunity costs) are discussed.Using data from the 1978, 1983 and 1993 Household Expenditure Survey, we estimate the rate of return based on the Mincer earnings function.Thus the values of the rate of return (for women) were 4.2%, 3.3% and 5.8% in 1978, 1983 and 1993 respectively.The increase in 1993 could be attributed to a less regulated labour market.Finally, we present some findings on income, educational attainment and socioeconomic status; this analysis is also based on the aforementioned surveys. |
