Abstract: | With a pre-1997 influx of high-flying immigrants from China, the "melting pot" of Hong kong 's Chinese society is again in ferment. Migrants from mainland China have long played a key role in the development of Hong Kong. Those who arrived in the years following the Communist victory in 1949 brought their capital and entrepreneurial skills, laying the foundation for a sustained economic boom in the British-run territory. Mao Zedong's disastrous Great Leap Forward led to another influx in 1962. With the approach of 1997, mainlanders have again been flowing into the country. |
