Abstract:Among basic determinants of outward internationalization are: n increasing importance of intangible knowledge which could be transferred without a loss to its owner only by internatiolization, n economies of scale and scope, n for some special products and services international production is a must in order to customize products and services to the demands of foreign markets. Outward internationalization is a must at the level of development of Slovene economy if firms wanted to keep their market share and even more so to strengthen it and grasp economies of scale and scope at the enlarged EU and world markets. In order to prevent possible negative implication of potential monopolization of local market of a small economy, outward internationalization has to be also regarded as a part of competition policy. It forces firms to be competitive internationally if for some other strategic or similar reasons competition on the local market is limited to local companies only (reserved competition according to Ozawa). Limited foreign entry has to be compensated by the stimulation of the competition among several local companies.
