Abstract:A high share of agricultural and labor-intensive production, and its geographical position on the border of four countries, are three main economic disadvantages of the Pomurje region. When Slovenia joins the EU, geographical position may become less important and may even turn into an advantage. On the other hand, labor-intensive production will face competition from countries where labor is much cheaper. In the EU, encompassing all Central and East European countries, Slovenia will not be a less developed country, and Pomurje will not be a less developed region. This means that agriculture in Pomurje cannot expect to benefit from EU structural and development funds. Moreover, inefficient agriculture fostered by subsidies cannot be a sound basis for regional economic development.A strategy of regional economic development should therefore be based on urbanization and openness of the region for capital inflow. However, at the time there are no institutions that would be able to prepare and implement such a strategy, nor it is clear what areas the Pomurje region should encompass.
