Abstract:Traditional theory and practice of strategic management explains the behavior of organizations in their business environments. Current turbulence means traditional models of strategic management are having to give way to alternative explanations. John Camillus reviews the 'predictive' and 'learning' paradigms accepted in the early evolution of strategic management, and points out their weaknesses in the face of massive discontinuous change, both external and internal to the company. New forms of organization have arisen in the current climate of change which are better explained by a 'transformational' paradigm which is pro-active and well-suited to bridge discontinuities. The author provides corporate examples of the adoption of the new paradigm.
