Abstract: | Economic growth in Europe during the recovery has been weak and it has been accompanied by high unemployment. European Union has become a home to over half of all the unemployed people in the OECD group of countries. But Germany, France and the UK have seen a pick-up in growth last year. The European economy is now turning the corner or the recent pick-up in growth will turn out to a false drawn. With appropriate monetary policy the European economy should now be able to grow rapidly. The single currency in 1999 with a "wide" EMU is difficult: monetary union may bring structural changes that create further adjustment problems for the European economy. |
