Abstract:This paper explores the potential value of the generation concept in reference to a study conducted in China in the 1980s. Applying the generational concept in an empirical investigation may be beneficial in understanding the social processes at work in creation of generations. The case study illustrates how the social forces and context shape generations and how they come distinctive from one another. China's intellectual youth of the 1980s were identified as a generation with it's own internal divisions, as a focus of this paper. Social class is often used in the study of different social groups because it has powers of explanation and it is also familiar to researchers. The concept of generation could illuminate various aspects of social behavior, with more application to concrete examples.
