Abstract:The article focuses on foreign exchange exposure of U.S. and Japanese banking firms. The exchange rate sensitivity of the equity returns of the U.S. banks are estimated and compared to Japanese bank holding companies. The results show that approximately one-third of thirty large U.S. bank holding companies appear to be sensitive to exchange rate changes while few of the Japanese banks observed do so. Using cross- sectional analysis the authors examine the sensitivity of U.S. firms by linking the U.S. estimates to accounting-based measures of currency risk.
