Abstract: | That is what Hong Kong has to be to raise the billions China needs. Paul Pun saw Hong Kong's golden glow for the first time as a teenager in 1973, frantically treading briny water off the shores of Kowloon. Clad only in his undershorts, Pun had left behind shirt and trousers on a Guangdong beach and family and friends in his home town of Guangzhow. He was desperate to escape the Red Guard terror and a hope-draining regimen of Chairman Mao, self-criticism and planting rice for the glory of the Motherland. |
