Abstract:This study estimates the contribution of net savings for each twelve motives to overall household saving using micro data from Japan. It was found that net saving for retirement and precautinary motives are of dominant importance, both of which are consistent with the life-cycle model. The savings motives of households vary greatly by age and that they save at each life stage for different motives. In the case of Japan the life-cycle model is very applicaple.
