Abstract:The newly passed China Agenda Outline for the 21 century by the Chinese government is China's strategy for sustainable development. Priority should be given to tourism as a sustainable industry. Sustainable tourist industry mainly refers to the following three aspects: 1. To meet the needs with emphasis on satisfying the basic needs of the host community and on top of this to meet the high-level needs of the tourists. The strategic requirements of China for tourism is "more earnings in foreign exchange and more returns of the money"; 2. Environmental requirements, which refers to the capacity of environment. Only by obtaining the optimal environmental capacity and by limiting tourist development within this capacity can sustainable development be realised. 3. Equality, which refers to social equality among people of both the same and different generations.
