Abstract: | The Dearing report on higher education praised British universities for their world-class research, but highlighted the poor quality of their teaching. The author discusses reactions to the findings and argues that university tutors need to become facilitators of learning. Universities, like other public-sector institutions, have experienced unprecedented change over the past two decades. On the one hand they have had to become more accountable for the way they manage their affairs; on the other, they have been obliged to cater to the needs of amass student clientele rather than those of a privileged few. |
