| Abstract: | In a world of asymmetric information and non-trivial monitoring costs, the design and implementation of a compensation and reward system that maximizes the individual's productivity is one of the critical variables affecting the firm's success. Lacking firm data, we reply on data from an athletic context, because in professional road racing the relationship between the race organizers and the athletes is very similar to the one between an employer and his/her employees. We find that - controlling for a large number of other possible determinants of race quality - the level of the price money as well as its distribution affect participant performance in the predicted way. |
