Abstract:Since the break-up of the former Soviet Union, the Russian economy has been making continuous progress in the direction of a market-based economy. The 1990s have seen substantial changes in Russia. These include elimination of centralised planning, with most state enterprises now free to choose their partners, make development plans and set the prices for their products. The privatisation of the state sector, with former state-owned enterprises transformed into joint stock companies under the special privatisation programme, has continued.
