Abstract:Companies must be able to design and market new products rapidly, to stay alive and competitive. Physically collocating the members of a new product development team can help achieve the cross-functional cooperation necessary in rushing these products to market. There is much to consider because many new research opportunities exist. A better understanding of the contingencies that affect collocation must be developed, and the effectiveness of various options needs to be tested empirically. For managers , recognizing all the dimensions of collocation provides additional options beyond the all-or-nothing approach. Understanding that not all team members may need to be together can reduce location costs.
